An investigation is on by the Factories and Boilers Department into the causes of the explosion of an ammonia tank in an ice plant at Puthiyangadi here in the night on November 12 which claimed the lives of three migrant workers from Assam and left another seriously injured.

The accident occurred when the workers were carrying out maintenance work on the ammonia tank at the A.V.A. Ice Plant and Cold Storage in the evening. The deceased have been identified as Raju, 25, Babin, 23, and Dibin, 22.

They hailed from Talukana, Halodhari and Hanumathai villages respectively in Lakhipur district, Assam. The injured, Monal Gogoi, 21, has been admitted to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital with 75 per cent burns. He hails from Khiladari village in Lakhipur.

Two other workers also suffered minor injuries in the accident.

The bodies of the deceased have been kept at the Pariyaram medical college hospital morgue.

The police said the relatives of the deceased had been informed of the accident. As per the direction of Labour Minister Shibu Baby John, an investigation was under way by the director of the Factories and Boilers Department which was looking after safety, health, and welfare of workers in factories.

A team of officials of the department arrived at the plant for on Sunday. Their preliminary finding is that the explosion was caused by excess pressure in the tank.
