‘I’ group has not sought change: MP

The ‘I’ faction in the Congress has not demanded leadership change in the State government, said K. Sudhakaran, MP.

Talking to mediapersons here on Thursday, the Congress leader said the ‘I’ group had not bargained for the deputy chief ministership or the post of Home Minister for KPCC president Chennithala. Mr. Chennithala did not hanker after the post of Deputy Chief Minister or a Cabinet berth. He was more intellectually advanced than any of the KPCC presidents, he said.

Regarding the confabulations between Congress leaders, Mr. Sudhakaran said informal discussions might have taken place between various congress leaders. Some State Ministers even came out with the statement that Mr. Chennithala would not be given the post of the Home Minister. The KPCC president was unnecessarily dragged into the issue. The position of the ‘I’ group has been clarified to put the controversies to rest, he said.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders of the faction held parleys at Aluva for selecting the group’s candidates for the Youth Congress election. The discussions centred on the candidates that have to be fielded in all the districts for the election to the feeder organisation, a leader said.

League stand

Thiruvananthapuram Staff Reporter writes: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will keep mum on the controversy over the induction of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala into the State Cabinet till the issue is taken up for discussion in the United Democratic Front (UDF) or till it is approached by the Congress, Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty has said.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the issue had not come up for discussion within the UDF and that there was no need for the IUML to air its views based on media reports.

The League, he said, strongly believed that the issue would be discussed and settled within the Congress itself.

The Congress had an all-India leadership and its own internal party mechanism to tackle such issues. There was no need for the League to interfere and even if there arose such a situation, the League would hold talks the Congress, if need with the Congress high command too, on the issue.

The stance of his party on the re-induction of K.B. Ganesh Kumar into the Cabinet too was the same since the issue had not yet come up for discussion within the UDF.

On the post of the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the League’s position on that post had been made clear even before the Assembly elections.

‘‘We have already said that we do not want it,” he said.
