Home furnishings from Kannur granted GI registration

September 22, 2009 05:07 pm | Updated 05:27 pm IST - KANNUR:

Textile home furnishing products from here have been granted geographical indication (GI) registration.

The GI registration under the Geographical Registration of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 was granted to the home furnishing products being exported from here, North Malabar Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) president, B. Maheshchandra Baliga said at a press conference here on Tuesday. The registration was expected to give a boost to home furnishing exports from here, he said adding that an assortment of items under the name 'Cannanore Home Furnishings' had been included under the GI registration.

Kerala Textile Exports Organisation president and NMCC vice-president C. Jayachandran said that the GI registration would not only make home furnishings from here more popular in the importing countries of the West but would also prevent home furnishing producers elsewhere from exporting their products as home furnishings from Kannur.

They said the granting of the registration followed the initiatives of the NMCC to form a consortium of textile producers here in the private and co-operative sectors in association with the United National Centre for Trade and Development and the Indian Merchants Chamber. The consortium submitted a project report for getting the registration from the Chennai-based Geographical Indication Registrar.
