The data on population census by religious community 2011 released by the Registrar-General and Census Commissioner has thrown up some interesting facts about Kozhikode district.
The population of the Hindus increased to 17,34,958 (males: 8,37,824, females: 8,97,134) from the figure of 16,69,161 in the last decade. Muslim population grew to 12,11,131 (males: 5, 64,489: females: 6,46,642) from the 2001 figure of 10,78,759 while the Christian population stood at 1,31, 516 (males; 64,367 and females: 67,149). Its population a decade ago was 1,27, 468.
The overall population in the district rose to 30,86,293 from 28, 79,131. The figure of other communities were Sikhs (297); Buddhists (235) Jains (601) others (588) and religion not stated (6,967).
Hindus constitute 56.21 per cent of the total population in the district; Muslims, 39.24 per cent and Christians, 4.26 per cent. The proportion was Hindus (57.97 per cent); Muslims (37.47 per cent) and Christians (4.43) in 2001.
State-wise, Hindus constitute 54.72 per cent of the total population in Kerala while Muslims accounted for 26.56 per cent and Christians 18.38 per cent. In 2001, Hindus had constituted 56.20 per cent, Muslims 24.7 per cent and Christians 19 per cent of the total population.
Of the total population of 3,34,06,061 in the State, the number of Hindus is 1,82,82,492, while the Muslim population is pegged at 88,73,472 and Christians 61,41,269. Region-wise, Kozhikode taluk has a population of 16,70,860. (Hindus: 8,48,212; Muslims : 7,21,294 and Christians: 96,843). Koyilandy taluk has a population of 7,28,168. (Hindus 4,64, 223; Muslims: 2,39,216 and Christians: 22,709) and Vadakara taluk, total population: 6,87,265. (Hindus: 4,22, 523; Muslim: 2,50,621 and Christian: 11, 964).
The Urban population in the district is 20,72,572 with Hindus accounting (12,50,392) Muslims (7,78,938) and Christians (37,136) and rural population: 10,13,721 with Hindus (4,84,566) ; Muslim (4,32,193) and Christians (94,380).
The district ranks the ninth in area (2,345 sq.km) in the State.
