The district achieved the highest SSLC examination pass percentage for the fourth year in succession recording 96.88 pass percentage against that of the State-level of 90.72.
The achievement this year is seen as the outcome of the SSLC results improvement programme launched in the district under the aegis of the district panchayat in 2006. The process of giving special coaching to SSLC students in the district under the ‘Mukulam’ project of the district panchayat has set in motion a drive for improving results.
The district’s percentage of SSLC examination pass in 2006-07 was 90.77 per cent, the highest in the State. That record was not broken as it continued to secure the highest State-level percentage of 96.41 per cent in 2007-08 and 96.74 per cent in 2008-09.
Total 34,418 students including 17,254 boys and 17,164 girls appeared for the SSLC examination in the district this year. Unaided schools accounted for 20,988 candidates.
Deputy Director of Education Baby Usha Kiran said that the district’s achievement showed the efficacy of the Mukulam project launched by the district panchayat in 2006 to give SSLC students special coaching in all the subjects. The special intervention aimed at improving the results paid off, she said.
Initially the project had been launched to give special coaching in English, Mathematics and Social Science as the students were found to have fared poorly in the examinations. Later the project was extended to all the subjects. The project includes special coaching classes, model examinations, night classes in some schools and counselling of students facing exam-related anxiety. The students were also being offered refreshment during the special coaching drive.
The officials said that a number of government schools recorded 100 per cent pass this year thanks to the project.
