A man from Asramam in the city was arrested by a team from the Kollam Excise early on Thursday morning on charges of smuggling in 99 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor from the Union Territory of Mahe. Excise Inspector O. Prasad, who led the team, gave the identity of the arrested person as Manu Arunjit.

Mr. Prasad said the liquor bottles were smuggled into the State in a sports utility vehicle (SUV). The vehicle was intercepted at Kundara during a special Onam drive by the Excise. Another man inside the intercepted vehicle managed to escape. He was identified as Habi, a native of Haripad. The liquor was smuggled in to be sold in the State during the Onam season.

The SUV was also taken into custody. Manu was produced before a magistrate court here in the evening and remanded to the district jail.
