Heavy rain that lashed the district over the last two days has caused severe damage to property. Many houses were destroyed and standing crops suffered losses.
More than 30 houses were partially damaged in the rain. Three houses were totally destroyed. A dilapidated building collapsed near Kallettumkara railway station. The incident happened around 8.30 a.m. More than 50 cycles kept at the cycle repair shop functioning in the building were damaged.
As the number of fever cases recorded a steady increase, health officials intensified preventive measures in outbreak-prone areas.
Health workers are conducting door-to-door awareness programmes. Accumulation of water, increase in construction activity, piling up of garbage, lack of public awareness on anti-mosquito measures, and inadequate mosquito management are the main reasons for increase in disease causing vectors.
Health workers have urged people to keep their surroundings clean. They have also been conducting awareness programmes in schools.
Several coconut trees were uprooted as tidal waves wreaked havoc in the district’s coastal belt. Seawalls have been damaged in many places.
Most houses along the coast were damaged as waves swept across the beaches.
Meanwhile, search operations for the two missing youths went futile at Munakkakadavu.
