Heavy rain lashing the district for the past few days has resulted in a rise in water level in Kuttanad.

Kainakary grama panchayat has been the worst affected. Areas including the R-Block have been submerged, posing difficulties to residents. A few areas on the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road were flooded on Saturday.

An anganawadi building was also destroyed in the rains.

Vehicular traffic on some roads in the Kuttanad villages of Champakkulam and Kainakari was disrupted due to flooding of the roads on Sunday. District Collector N. Padmakumar accompanied by Revenue officials visited the affected areas to take stock of the situation.

Sunil P. Padmanabhan, health and education standing committee chairman of Kainakary grama panchayat, said more than half the families in IHDP colony in Nadichira in R-block were staying away from their houses due to the flooding.

About 350 farmers in the R-block will not be able to cultivate paddy.
