Extensive damages to property have been reported in the heavy rain and gusty wind that lashed parts of the district on Sunday. While no official figures have been published, destruction has been massive in the Kottayam and Vaikom taluks.

Scores of houses suffered damages and hundreds of tress were uprooted in the typhoonic winds that accompanied the heavy rain in parts of Kottaym taluk. Most houses were damaged as trees fell on them. In other cases, roofs were swept away in the winds.

Power lines snapped

Power lines in many parts of the taluk snapped when trees uprooted and fell on them in the wind that lasted for over five minutes. Most of the people in the area had run out of their houses to safety.

According to preliminary reports, nearly 40 houses were damaged in Nattakom village alone. Heavy damage to property has been reported from Veloor and Panachikkad panchayats. According to reports from Vaikom, at least 10 houses were damaged in the heavy rain. In most cases where the roofs were swept away, people have covered the top portion of their houses with tarpaulin sheets and continue to stay there.

The loss to agriculture and property has not been estimated so far. KSEB Ltd has also suffered heavy damages.
