The Kerala High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to two teachers who are accused in the case relating to the suicide of a student at Trinity Lyceum School, Kollam.
The High Court directed the teachers to appear before the magistrate court concerned on November 17 and asked the court to grant them regular bail on executing a bond of ₹50,000 each.
Allowing the anticipatory bail pleas of the teachers, Sindhu Paul and Crescence Navis, the court observed that no purpose would be served by putting the petitioners behind bars.
The custodial interrogation of the petitioners was not required in the case. Moreover, if the accused teachers were subjected to custodial interrogation, it would only humiliate them. The teachers were not persons with any criminal antecedents and there was no reason to suspect that they would commit similar offences if they were granted bail.
Other conditions
The other conditions of the bail are; they should make themselves available for interrogation before the investigation officer between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on November 18, 19 and 20. They should appear before the investigation officer on all Saturdays for one month between 10 a.m. and 12 noon after Nov. 20. The court directed the petitioners to make themselves available for interrogation as and when required.
The teachers have been charged with offences under Sections 305 (abetment of suicide committed by a child) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC)and under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act. The 15-year-old girl took her life by jumping off the third floor of the school.
