Festival ends with spectacular display of fireworks

The 30-hour-long events of Thrissur Pooram concluded on Saturday with the ceremony ‘Upacharam Cholli Piriyal’. The ceremony, called as ‘Desakkarude Pooram’, is mostly attended by local residents. Idols of the Paramekkavu Bhagavathy and Thiruvambady Bhagavathy were taken from the Thekkinkadu Maidan to respective temples in the farewell ceremony. The festivities were ended with spectacular display of fireworks.

Huge crowd

Heavy crowd thronged Thekkinkadu Maidan and Swaraj Round to witness the elephant parade, percussion ensembles and fireworks. All the main ceremonies of the main pooram were re-enacted on Monday.

Processions carrying idols had been taken to the Sree Vadakkunnathan temple in the morning itself. Elephants Paramekkavu Padmanabhan and Thiruvambadi Sivasunder carried the idols. Percussion ensemble led by Peruvanam Kuttan Marar and Kizhakkoot Aniyan Marar pepped up the spirit. Thousands of people witnessed the fireworks in the wee hours on Saturday.


Hundreds of devotees took part in the grand feast served by the Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu Devaswoms at Kousthubham auditorium and Agrasala respectively.

Moments of tension

Tension prevailed during the Pakal Pooram on Saturday when two elephants turned unruly. However mahouts and elephant squad controlled them. A few persons suffered minor injuries when people ran helter-skelter.
