The government has sought legal advice on taking action against RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat for violation of the guidelines on hoisting the tricolour during Independence Day celebrations, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a submission moved by Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, he said Mr. Bhagawat was the chief guest at the Independence Day celebration held at the Kannaki Amman school in Palakkad on Tuesday.

“An investigation by the District Educational Officer revealed that the flag-hoisting ceremony was followed by singing of Vande Matharam instead of the national anthem. Later, the Principal hoisted the national flag at a separate venue in the school, again without the singing of the national anthem,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan assured the House that the government would take action based on legal advice about the incident.

‘A mystery’

Moving the submission, Mr. Chennithala said the school management had ignored the directions from the district administration banning the RSS chief from hoisting the national flag. He said it was a mystery that the government had failed to take action on the violation of the flag code.
