THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor P. Sathasivam has called upon the lawyer community and the media fraternity to evolve a cordial working relationship in the larger public interest.

Delivering the 7th V.G. Govindan Nair Lecture organised by the Trivandrum Bar Assoiation here on Thursday, the Governor pointed out that it was imperative in a democracy for the court proceedings to reach the public. His own experience had taught him that the media could play a major role in enriching the processes of the court and in keeping the public informed about the new directions of jurisprudence.

Mr. Sathasivam, who spoke on ‘Recent trends in judicial reforms: global perspective’, said that during his long career in the judiciary, he had maintained a very cordial relationship with the media and this had helped him greatly in communicating the views and decisions of the courts to the people effectively. The media also had the responsibility to work within the liberties allowed to them in the courts so that they enjoyed the freedom to report the proceedings of the courts without any hindrance.

The Governor said he was gratified to learn that serious efforts were being made by all sides to resolve all outstanding disputes and hoped that the issues that had affected the cordial working relationship between the lawyer and media fraternities would be resolved very soon.

Advocate General C.P. Sudhakara Prasad and District and Sessions Judge K. Haripal delivered special addresses on the occasion. Bar Association president Anayara Shaji chaired the meeting, which was also addressed by its secretary Thonnackal G. Rajeev, former Association president S.V. Premakumaran Nair, among others.
