The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the UInited Democratic Front (UDF) government of appeasing minority communities.
Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, BJP State unit general secretary K. Surendran said the government had succumbed to the unrelenting pressure exerted by the minorities that were represented by the Kerala Congress (M) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
“There were instances even before the recent by-elections to prove that the government had succumbed to the pressure of minorities. It was just before the Piravom by-election that the government had assigned public land to three colleges run by Christian managements. Later, during the run-up to the Neyyattinkara by-election, the government had issued an order that makes it possible for individuals to obtain caste certificates based on the recommendations of Bishops. These decisions were intended to please the leadership of minority communities,” he said.
Mr. Surendran said the departments that were being headed by leaders of the IUML were flouting various norms to achieve vested interests. “Nearly 170 illegal appointments have been made to the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Mission by the Education Department.
In addition, members of the party were included in as many as 13 district planning councils at the time of their reconstitution by the Department for Panchayats. The stance of the government would threaten the secular fabric of the State,” he said.
Mr. Surendran said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] had lost its distinctive identity in the wake of the party’s Central leadership deciding to support Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the upcoming Presidential election. “The decision cannot be justified considering the staunch opposition the party had held to most of the decisions taken by Pranab Mukherjee in his capacity as the Finance Minister,” he said.
He alleged that the State leadership of the CPI(M) had colluded with Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan in concluding the ongoing investigation in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case with the arrest of party Panur area committee member P.K. Kunhanandan.
