October 26, 2013 04:45 am | Updated 04:49 am IST - Kozhikode

Union Minister of State for Labour Kodikkunnil Suresh said here on Friday that the Union government would be ready to sanction an ESI super specialty hospital for the district if the State government could find five acres of land for the project.

He was speaking after announcing the formal elevation of ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation) Divisional Office in Kozhikode as a Sub Regional Office. The Minister said the Union government would be ready to clear all the formalities in three months if the land was made available. “Also, the government would seriously consider Kozhikode if the ESI Corporation is opening a second medical College Hospital in Kerala,” he added. Mr. Suresh said the first ESI medical college in Kerala would come up in Mavelikara, giving big opportunities to the children of labourers.

Of the 100 medical seats, 25 would be reserved for the children of ESI members, he added.

The Union government would be willing to allot fund for the construction of new building for ESI dispensaries currently functioning in rented building if the State was ready to hand over the required land, he said.
