A baby girl was found abandoned on the Madurai-Kollam passenger train that arrived at the Kollam railway station on Monday morning. The child was found by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel during a routine check of the train before it was taken to the yard.
The child appeared friendly. The RPF personnel launched a search for the girl’s parents at the railway station but in vain. Since no one came forward to claim the child, the district Child Welfare Council (CWC) authorities were informed.
CWC chairman C.J. Antony said the child, around two years of age, called out for her mother occasionally but did not say anything else. Prima facie, the child appeared to be a Malayali, he said. Since the Kollam CWC unit does not have facilities to accommodate children below five years of age, the child was taken to the adoption centre of the State Council for Child Welfare in Thiruvananthapuram in the evening.
