Id-ul-Fitr was celebrated on Tuesday to mark the end of the month-long Ramzan fasting by offering special prayers in mosques.

People celebrated the festival visiting houses of friends and relatives, giving gifts to children, and enjoying special Id feast.

There was an ambience of festivity and religious fervour in Muslim neighbourhoods here in the morning as Muslims wearing new clothes thronged local mosques in the morning to join the special Id namaz.

There were no Id-gahs for holding the prayers because of monsoon showers. Muslim devotees from all walks of life took part in the namaz followed by Id sermon.

After the prayer, the devotees hugged each other and exchanged pleasantries in the mosques. Elders also presented gifts and money to children on the occasion.

After the morning gathering to perform the prayer, the devotees paid visits to the households of relatives and well-wishers.

Id prayers were held at juma masjids at Chalad, Kannur City, Camp Bazar, Thazhe Chovva, Valapattanam, Kakkad, Azhikode and Mundayad, among others.

Prayer for Palestinians

Staff Reporter writes from Kasaragod: Marking the culmination of the month-long arduous fast that underscores the need to lead a life of piety, sacrifice and tolerance, the faithful celebrated Id-ul-Fitr as mosques and special Id-gahs across the district reverberated with mass prayers.

Zakah

Dressed in their best, the faithful, young and old alike, exchanged pleasantries and had a sumptuous feast before distributing ‘zakah’ by visiting houses of friends, relatives and neighbours to espouse the philosophy that none should be deprived of food on the Id day and to compensate the shortcomings unintentionally committed during the month-long fast.

But celebrations this time, despite a sunny weather in an otherwise monsoon season, were low-key to express solidarity with the victims of the conflict in Gaza strip.

This was amply reflected in the mass gathering as prayers were held to mitigate sufferings of hundreds of innocent Palestinian nationals who fell victim to the attack by the Israeli troops, killing nearly 1,000 people and grievously wounding hundreds besides causing extensive damage to properties in the region.

Heavy rush

The mosques and the Id-gahs witnessed a heavy rush of people for the special prayers solemnised by religious heads in the district, which has a sizeable population of Muslim community.

Uplift of oppressed

Solemnising the prayers held at Hira Masjid in Kanhangad, Islamic scholar Nassar Cherukara exhorted the faithful to strive for the uplift of the oppressed and the marginalised strata of the society as said in the holy Koran.

Nassar Cherukara also stressed on the need to express solidarity with the Palestinians who were waging a bleak battle for survival in their own home land and urged the people to pray for them.
