Gearing up for a green election

April 03, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The District Suchitwa Mission, in association with the district administration and the district election office here, will be implementing a green protocol in the district during the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, District Collector S. Harikishore has said that the green protocol was aimed at creating a zero-waste zone at all the election venues in the district, including polling booths, elections offices, distribution, reception and counting centres and various campaign spots.

According to him, the key objective is to make the Assembly election in the district a clean and green one. The green protocol team of the district administration recommends avoiding use of non-biodegradables and promoting maximum use of reusable or recyclable materials for the poll campaign.

The team will also sensitise all stakeholders on responsible waste management, besides declaring all the venues as green venues.

The Collector said the District Suchitwa Mission was planning to organise a 3,500-strong green volunteer force in association with the National Service Scheme, Student Police Cadets, NCC, Kudumbasree Mission, Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana agents, National Savings, Red Cross, Nehru Yuva Kendra and other like-minded organisations in the district. The Suchitwa Mission will facilitate and coordinate the green protocol activities for the Collector.

He said the mission would give training on ‘green election’ to the volunteers, officials on election duty, political party representatives, teachers and police officers.

Green protocol aims at creating zero-waste zone at all the election venues in district.
