Financial issues will not hamper land acquisition or infrastructure creation for the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
He was inaugurating a temporary building for the university on Thunchan Memorial Government College campus at Tirur on Saturday.
Funds would be allotted for acquiring land for the university at Tirur. The government had been successful in taking decisions in accordance with the needs of the State, he added.
DYFI activists waived black flags at the Chief Minister’s vehicle. The police pushed the protestors aside and let the motorcade proceed. The temporary building, with a plinth area of 11,800 sq ft, stands on five acres of land. It was set up at a cost of Rs.2.16 crore.
On getting new buildings, this would be handed over to the college. The building has five classrooms, a library, a conference hall, staff rooms, and the office of the Vice Chancellor.
Hindustan Prefab, a public sector unit, constructed the building in 98 days. University officials said faculty appointment would be completed in a few days. Three Professors, four Associate Professors, and 15 Assistant Professors are to be appointed. The university is to launch postgraduate programmes in Linguistics, Malayalam Literature, literary writing, Mass Communication and Journalism, and cultural studies. Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb presided over the function. Minister for Culture K.C. Joseph; E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP; MLAs C. Mammootty, K.N.A. Khader, M. Ummer, Abdurahman Randathani, and P. Ubaidulla; university Vice-Chancellor K. Jayakumar; district panchayat president Suhara Mampad; District Collector K. Biju; Tirur Municipal Chairperson K. Safiya; and Tirur Block panchayat president M. Abdulla Kutty were among those who spoke.
