Kudumbasree women has tested uncharted waters before, but Malappuram will see them making a film. A three-day Monsoon Film Festival organised by the Kudumbasree District Mission here is a precursor to their filmmaking plans.
A first-of-its-kind venture by the Kudumbasree Mission in the district, the event is being attended by 300-od women. “We have succeeded in creating a theatre feel exclusively for our women. It’s evident from the way they sat and viewed the films we screened,” said District Project Manager C.M. Sibla. “Our women are seriously thinking of making a film. This festival is a forerunner to that,” she said.
Theatre and film artiste Nilambur Ayisha inaugurated the three-day film festival titled ‘Mazha, Kattan, Pinnoru Cilma’ at DTPC Hall here on Thursday.
Justifying the event title, Ms. Ayisha inaugurated the mela by pouring black tea for the women. They will have a session on the politics of black tea on Saturday.
A new world
The films — on transgender issues, women’s emancipation and empowerment, and environmental issues — took them to a world of cinema they were unfamiliar with. “There is cinema beyond Mammootty and Mohanlal,” chuckled a senior woman among the audience.
A discussion on ‘Ediyude cinema and cinemayude edi’ will take place on Friday. Actor Anumol and film critics Megha Radhakrishnan and Unnikrishnan Avala will speak.
Recreating the theatre feel of the yore, groundnut vendors were seen moving through the crowds during intervals.
