In a bid to counter the alleged neglect meted out to Kerala in running special trains to cater to the needs of Malayalis working outside the State who want to come home during Onam, Railways on Monday announced special trains from Hyderabad, Yesvantpur, Bangalore, and Chennai Central to various places in the State.
Railways swung into action after Chief Minister Oommen Chandy last week conveyed to them the displeasure of his government on the Railways' failure to sanction adequate special trains.
The dates and destinations of the five special trains is what is said to have irked the government, though Mr. Chandy had written to Railways well in advance.
The government's displeasure followed the decision of Railways to operate only five special trains and the move to skip Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi while charting out the trains.
With only four days left for Thiruvonam, Railways came out with additional special trains to pacify the State government and cater to the needs of Malayalis working in Hyderabad, Yesvantpur, Bangalore, and Chennai.
The 07166 Hyderabad-Kollam Special will leave Hyderabad at 1.30 p.m. on September 6 to arrive at Kollam at 7 p.m. the next day. The 07165 Kollam-Hyderabad Special will leave Kollam at 11 p.m. on September 7 to reach Hyderabad at 4.45 a.m. on September 9.
The 06537 Yesvantpur-Kochuveli Garib Rath Special will leave Yesvantpur at 4.45 p.m. on September 6 to arrive Kochuveli at 11.10 a.m. the next day.
The 06538 Kochuveli-Yesvantpur Garib Rath Special will leave Kochuveli at 2 p.m. on September 7 to reach Yesvantpur at 8.10 a.m. the next day.
The 06541 Bangalore City-Kochuveli Special will leave Bangalore City at 6.50 p.m. on September 7 to arrive at Kochuveli at 12 noon the next day. The 06542 Kochuveli-Bangalore City Special will leave Kochuveli at 2 p.m. on September 11 to reach Bangalore City at 7.40 a.m. the next day.
The 06081 Chennai Central-Kochuveli Superfast Special will leave Chennai Central at 3.15 p.m. on September 7 to arrive at Kochuveli at 7.10 a.m. the next day. The 06082 Kochuveli-Chennai Central Superfast Special will leave Kochuveli at 1.45 p.m. on September 10 to reach Chennai Central at 6.15 a.m. the next day.
Advance reservation for the trains will begin on Tuesday, a Railway spokesman said.
Two long-distance express trains scheduled to leave from Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tirunelveli on September 6 have been rescheduled due to late running of incoming trains.
The 16346 Thiruvananthapuram- Lokmanya Thilak Nethravathi Express, scheduled to depart at 9.50 a.m., has been rescheduled to leave at 1.30 p.m.
The 12297 Tirunelveli- Hapa Express via Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam will leave Tirunelveli at 6 p.m. instead of 5.45 a.m.
