The Nair Service Society (NSS) has cautioned the authorities against policies aimed at marginalising the forward communities with an eye on vote bank. Presenting the 104th annual budget at the NSS headquarters at Perunna, general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair came down on the Union government, which, he said, had established welfare commissions for almost all other communities, for excluding the poor among the forward communities in this regard.
“They have now established National Commission for the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes. However, they have not considered it fit to establish a commission for the economically backward among the forward communities. Exclusion of the forward communities has become a political practice,” he said.
Mr. Nair said that in spite of repeated representations by the NSS, the Centre has not implemented the recommendations of the S.R. Sinhu Commission which was constituted to look into the issue of the economically backward among the forward communities. “Even now they are planning to hike the ceiling for the reserved communities to enjoy benefits, from the present ₹6 lakh to ₹8 lakh,” he said.
NSS general secretary wanted the Mannam Jayanti Day to be brought under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Though the Jayanti is a restricted public holiday since 2014, the authorities are yet to bring it under the Act though it is an emotional issue for the community, he said.
The budget meet later adopted resolutions seeking declaration of the Mannam Jayanti Day as a public holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act. Another resolution seeking implementation of the S.R. Sinhu Commission Report was adopted at the meeting.
P.N. Narendranathan Nair, NSS president, chaired the session.
