The Chengannur bypoll result will be an assessment of both the Central and State governments, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has said.

He was inaugurating the UDF election convention at Chengannur on Thursday. Mr. Chennithala said the LDF government would open liquor outlets all over the State after the bypoll.

He said the State government had failed on all fronts. “There is nothing happening on the development front in the State. The LDF government is pushing the State into a debt trap,” Mr. Chennithala said.

Mr. Chennithala alleged that the law and order situation had deteriorated in the State.

“In the first 23 months of the LDF rule, the State had witnessed 23 political murders. Both the LDF and the BJP are engaged in a killing spree. Youth Congress activist S.P. Shuhaib was murdered with the knowledge of the CPI(M) leadership. The law and order situation in the State has worsened. After 2021, Pinarayi Vijayan will be known as the last communist Chief Minister in the country,” Mr. Chennithala said.

‘Wrong policies’

He said that religious minorities were being targeted in the country under the BJP-led NDA government.

“Minorities are facing large-scale violence in States ruled by the BJP governments. Both the Centre and State governments are doing nothing to stop the persecution. The Union government with its wrong policies has put the people of the country in a dock,” he said, adding that the people to vote for a change in the forthcoming bypoll in Chengannur.

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the bypoll would determine the future of Kerala politics.
