Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution K.V. Thomas on Friday said the foodgrain allocation to the State would not decrease on implementing the National Food Security Act.
He said the Act would not have any impact on the State’s foodgrain allocation of 14,72,688 tonnes.
From this allocation, the State government had to decide the quantity of rice and wheat. He was addressing a meeting here on Friday organised by the Kollam DCC to honour him for piloting the Food Security Bill.
He said by 2040, the foodgrain stock position of the country would anywhere between 250 and 300 million tonnes.
The meeting was inaugurated by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Padmaja Venugopal. The former KPCC president C.V. Padmarajan, KPCC vice-president Bharatheepuram Sasi and N. Peethambara Kurup, MP, spoke. District Congress Committee president Pratapavarma Thampan presided.
Curbs to be lifted
Special Correspondent writes from Thiruvananthapuram: The Centre will soon take a positive decision on lifting the curbs on distributing foodgrains to ration card holders in the State, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob has said.
Mr.Jacob said in a release here on Thursday that Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies gave him an assurance to this effect at a meeting on Wednesday. Mr. Thomas gave the assurance on Mr.Jacob’s request to ease the curbs and permit distribution of the 1.39 lakh tonnes of food grains sanctioned by the Centre, he said.
