Five persons, including three women, were killed in a collision between a jeep and a container lorry on the Kulathupuzha-Thenmala road on Thursday morning. The dead were occupants of the jeep, including the owner who was driving the vehicle.

The police identified the victims as Haneefa Rawther, 56, of Thenmala, owner of the jeep; Rosamma Simon, 50, of Aryankavu; Gopinathan, 65, of Thenmala; and Ponnamma, 58, and Mariamma, 57, both of Kulathupuzha. Seven other occupants of the jeep were injured in the accident, two of them grievously. They were rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital.

Those travelling in the jeep were thrown out in the impact of the collision. Haneefa and Ponnamma died on the spot. Rosamma was declared dead on arrival at a hospital at Kulathupuzha and Mariamma at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital. Gopinathan succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the Punalur taluk hospital.
