A major disaster was averted in the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital after a gas leak led to a fire in the pathology lab on the second floor of the J-Block there on Sunday.

According to eye-witnesses, a gas cylinder leak led to the fire and because the staff managed to take out other gas cylinders and since the leaking cylinder had only little gas left in it, a major disaster was averted. Fire and rescue personnel managed to douse the fire in half an hour, by which time however, equipment worth around Rs.2 lakh was gutted.
