Fire breaks out in city pump house

January 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - THRISSUR:

A fire broke out at a pump house of the corporation near the Jaihind Market on Tuesday.

The police said the pump and clothes illegally kept in the pump house by wayside vendors were destroyed in the fire.

The fire was reported around 9.30 a.m. Fire and Rescue services personnel extinguished the fire within a few minutes.

Immediate action by the firemen prevented the fire from spreading to nearby shops.

“As the shops remained closed on account of the hartal, our task was easier,” said a fireman. Two lorries of the corporation transporting water were rushed to the spot, but the firemen had put out the fire by then.

Mayor Rajan Pallan visited the spot.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

The pump house is used to pump water to the Jaihind Market Building.

Rubber factory gutted

In another incident, fire in a rubber factory at Velangallur, near here, on Tuesday destroyed some of its areas, including its control room and rest area of the workers.

The fire was reported around 11 a.m.

Two fire engines were pressed into service. The fire was brought under control around 11.30 a.m.

Short circuit is suspected to have been the cause of fire.

The police said the fire spread after two containers of toluene kept in the factory were exposed to flames. Toluene is highly inflammable.
