Fewer students qualify for higher studies in Kerala

79.39% pass in higher secondary examination this year, 73.34% in VHSE

Fewer students—from the higher secondary and vocational higher secondary streams (VHSE) in Kerala—qualified for higher studies this year when compared to 2013 as these examinations returned pass percentages of 79.39 and 73.34 respectively.

Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb announced here on Tuesday that 2.71 lakh candidates from the higher secondary stream and 26,903, from the vocational stream had become eligible for higher education. In 2013 the pass percentages for these examinations were 81.34 and 85.35, respectively.

For the higher secondary exams while Ernakulam district returned the highest pass percentage(84.35), Pathanamthitta returned the lowest (71.73). This year 6,783 students got an A+ in all subjects as against 5,183 in 2013. Forty schools recorded an “all pass” and 28 of these were unaided institutions and only five, government schools. While in government schools the pass percentage was 78.77, in unaided schools it was 82 per cent.

Cent per cent for 84

Eighty four students from schools across the State scored 100 per cent marks for all subjects (1200 out of 1200). Of these, 13 students were from Thiruvananthapuram district, the highest from a district. All 84 students received grace marks in the examinations.

The largest contingent of students—758—was from St. Mary’s HSS, Pattom, here. The pass percentage here was 91.69. The school was also host to the highest number of students with A+ grade for all subjects.

Forty-four higher secondary schools in the State recorded a pass percentage of less than 30. Of these, 11 were government schools. From the State Open School 24,654 students qualified for higher studies; a pass percentage of 35.13.

In the VHS examinations 85.27 per cent of candidates from Thrissur district cleared parts one, two and three. In Pathanamthitta, the corresponding figure was 56.51.

Of the 16 VHS schools which in 2013 recorded a pass percentage of less than 50, eight, returned even lower pass percentages this year. At the Government Tribal VHSS Puthur, Attappady, the pass percentage this year was 3.7. Last year this was 20.51.

The results of the examinations are available at various websites including www.kerala.gov.in, www.results.nic.in, www.keralaresults.nic.in, www.results.itschool.gov.in, www.prd.kerala.gov.in and at www.cdit.org. The HS and VHS SAY examinations would begin in June.
