Viral fever is spreading fast in the colony of landless Karshaka Sanghom workers camping in huts in the vast expanse of the illegally converted paddy land at Aranmula puncha.
As many as 12 persons afflicted with viral fever remain bedridden in their huts.
A good number of people staying in huts at Aranmula puncha was suffering from one or the other health problem that require immediate medical care, Santhamma, a housewife from the colony, said.
Santhamma alleged that neither any Health Department staff not any panchayat official visited the colony with a helping hand as on Saturday.
Mosquito menace
“Mosquito menace here is horrible, potable water a real problem, and the official machinery have turned a deaf ear to our health problems,” laments Bhavani Amma, a 62-year-old woman who is bed-ridden with viral fever since the past one week.
Nearly 435 landless families, owing allegiance to the Karshaka Sanghom of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), have pitched tents at the Aranmula puncha in January as part of their agitation demanding distribution of excess land.
R. Ajayakumar, district panchayat member and CPI(M) district committee member, said the Karshaka Sanghom workers pitched 416 sheds at the Aranmula puncha as part of their agitation for land.
Nearly 63 families were staying in small sheds with tiled roof at the illegally converted portion of the paddy land, braving all adverse conditions since the past 137 days.
Mr. Ajayakumar called upon the district administration to provide healthcare to the landless families at Aranmula puncha without any delay.
No ration
These hapless families were not even getting rice, sugar, or kerosene through ration shops, Mr. Ajayakumar alleged.
He said the State government should take immediate steps to provide proper healthcare to all the families staying at Aranmula puncha, which had been identified as excess land by the taluk Land Board .
