Fears about Idukki medical college allayed

July 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - IDUKKI:

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja on Friday said construction of the administrative block of the Government Medical College, Idukki, would start soon.

She said the design of the additional hospital block was being examined by the technical university and its construction work would also begin soon.

Ms. Shylaja alleged that the admission to the second batch was done by the previous government without providing basic facilities.

The Union government gave its nod to admit students after the United Democratic Front (UDF) government gave a promise that basic facilities as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines would be ensured there.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government was committed to retaining the medical college, she said and added that all infrastructure as per the MCI guidelines would be arranged soon.

Hartal today

The UDF coordination committee has announced a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the district on Saturday alleging that the LDF government was trying to scuttle the medical college, which was a long-cherished dream of the people. UDF convener A.Ashokan said the hartal would be observed in a peaceful manner.
