The female wild elephant and its calf captured from the Peppara forests near Vithura in Thiruvananthapuram district were brought to the elephant camp and rehabilitation centre at Konni on Monday night.

Veterinary surgeon of the Forest Department Shasindra Dev, assistant surgeon Fiji Ferdinand, and Sunilkumar, retired veterinary surgeon, who tranquilized the animals, were with the team that transported the elephants to the camp.

The mother elephant, with injuries all over her body, and the calf were nudged into two cabins inside the wooden elephant kraal with the help of two tamed elephants.

Divisional Forest Officer T.Pradeepkumar told The Hindu that the public would not be allowed to go near the kraal till the treatment of the pachyderm was over. The mother elephant, about 40 years old, and the calf, around two years, had strayed into the forest fringes of Peppara a week ago. The female elephant had injuries all over her body, apparently caused by the bursting of crackers by the tribal people and villagers to protect their crop in the forest fringes.
