Over one lakh people have been shifted to relief camps functioning in various parts of the flood-hit district.

In Kuttanad alone, 220 relief camps are functioning. S. Sudhimon, president of the Kainakary grama panchayat, which bore the brunt of the floods, said that 100 families in the panchayat had left the relief camps.

“The officials are saying that those receiving pension from the government, those who have gone to Gulf countries, even if that journey was on the previous day and those with slightly higher income and toddy tappers cannot be included in the relief camps. This has created difficulty for us,” he said.

He said that there was no threat of communicable disease or water-borne diseases in the panchayat.

Meanwhile the District Collector has declared holiday for all educational institutions including professional colleges in Kuttanad taluk on Monday.
