Extra precautions to be taken for safety on boats

October 03, 2009 02:46 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 09:37 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation will take additional precautions to ensure the safety of tourists travelling in its boats against the background of the boat tragedy at Thekkady, Chairman of the Corporation Cheriyan Philip said here on Saturday.

Though the boats running at Thekkady, Malampuzha, Kochi, Kumarakom and Veli had current fitness certificates, their fitness would be rechecked by experts. Though its drivers possessed licences, they would be subjected to fresh driving tests. The Corporation would also ensure they had the required qualification to operate fibre and speed boats.

The Chairman said all the boats would carry sufficient number of life jackets and buoys. Tourists will compulsorily have to wear life jackets while on the boats.

Mr. Philip said boat services would be resumed at Thekkady only after joint consultations at the higher levels of the Water Resources, Tourism, and Forest departments.
