Expedite work on National Games venues: panel

Fourth report by Assembly panel on youth affairs

December 11, 2014 11:13 am | Updated 11:13 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Assembly Committee on Youth Welfare and Youth Affairs has expressed concern over the pace at which the work on certain National Games venues is progressing.

After tabling its fourth report in the Assembly on Wednesday, committee chairman Joseph Vazhakkan told reporters that though there was considerable progress in completing the works, only limited time was left for before the start of the 35 National Games.

The committee felt that the work on the games village at Menamkulam, the open ground and gallery of the green field stadium at Karyavattom, and the shooting range at Vattiyurkavu was moving at a very slow pace. Workers should be deployed on shift duty to complete the work soon, the committee said.

Only 60 per cent of the work on tennis court at Medical College High School had been completed. Landscaping and other works should be completed by December 15. Volleyball posts should soon be installed at the V.K.K. Menon Stadium in Kozhikode.

The differences of opinion between hockey associations should be sorted out and the State should bring out a good team for the games. Urgent steps should be taken to ensure that Kerala’s sportsmen employed in other States participated in the games, the committee said.

Grace marks should be given to students who served as volunteers. Prize money of Rs.10 lakh, Rs.5 lakh, and Rs.3 lakh respectively should be given to sportspersons who represented the State.
