Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has demanded that the Chief Minister take steps expedite the construction of seawall at Chellanam.

In a letter to Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, he said the present seawall on a 1-km stretch was in ruins. “Had it been constructed properly, it could have resisted the impact of the cyclone. The seawall should be constructed along 17 km with groins like the Dronacharya model of the Navy. An estimate of ₹110 crore was prepared for the project in 2014. The government should prepare a revised estimate and complete the work in three phases,” he said.

“As many as 10 houses were completely damaged and 160 others became uninhabitable in Chellanam. The damaged houses should be reconstructed, besides providing free ration to victims of the calamity. The government should either provide bio-toilets or concrete septic tanks,” the former Chief Minister said. He also urged Mr. Vijayan to hold a meeting of local leaders.
