As the three-day district conference of the Communist Party of India drew to a close on Tuesday, the key constituent of the ruling Left Democratic Front alliance in the State has called for speedy execution of harbour projects in the region.
The time-bound completion of the Kasaragod harbour would help hassle-free shipment of cargo from major harbours at Beypore and Mangaluru, the party said in a resolution as the conference concluded at nearby Perumala.
The main hurdle for the project is the heavy sand deposit in the estuary of the Chandragiri river. The issue could be tackled through dredging so as to ensure requisite depth for boats and smaller ships to sail. The meeting urged the State to appoint an expert committee to study the feasibility of the harbour.
The meeting also underscored the need to include Tulu language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. Tulu, one of the five Dravidan languages, spoken by around 60 lakh people across India, should be accorded the status it merits. Many ancient works are authored in Tulu, the meeting said in another resolution.
It is ironic that quite a few languages spoken by fewer number of people have already been included in the 8th Schedule, it said.
