In a move to promote multi-disciplinary learning among its departments, the varsity is planning to give students greater autonomy in choosing what they want to learn.
The Hindu has learnt that different departments and centres of learning will soon offer electives, which students can choose depending on their interest and course structure.
Choosing an elective will be made mandatory for the postgraduate students as a first step towards strengthening multi-disciplinary learning and the teaching process on campus. Electives will be introduced for undergraduates at a later stage.
Each elective will be assigned credits by each department.
They will be eligible for extra credits for pursuing the elective. The varsity will issue a separate statement of marks based on their performance.
The departments will soon come up with the elective courses based on the expertise of the faculty members. The selection of programmes will depend on its research and job potential.
Engineering aspirants will be offered electives that would supplement their core area of study.
A student of M.Tech electronics will get a chance to choose an elective on mechatronics or finance. The electives are likely to be introduced from the new academic year. Only select courses will be available in the first phase. More programmes will be introduced later based on the students’ response to the new electives on offer.
