The total e-literacy programme launched under the auspices of the P.N. Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra in seven panchayats each in all the 14 districts will bring about big positive changes in the socio-economic spheres, K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, has said.

The MLA was inaugurating the Social Development Week observance as part of the 106th birth anniversary of P.N. Panicker at a function held at the Collectorate conference hall here on Tuesday.

‘Ignited cultural movement’

Mr Panicker, who is regarded as the father of the library movement in Kerala, was the one who had ignited a popular cultural movement which helped the State to acquire total literacy in the 1990s, the MLA said.

Mr Nair said e-money transaction that formed part of the e-literacy would be of great help in curbing corruption and ensuring transparency in the society. He said Kerala had to go a long way in terms of e-literacy and once the programme was completed, the common people would be its major beneficiaries.

e-money deals

The MLA said the role of physical currency was diminishing in most of the developed countries.

One of the biggest advantages of e-money transactions was that it could be used anytime and anywhere. Money can be transferred online to anyone and it is instantly received at the other end. It has made global transactions easier, and transactions can be made even after the banking hours and on holidays. Reduced bank transfer costs, good deals for bank customers, reliability, swift transactions, etc, were the attractions of e-money, he said.

The P.N. Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra has undertaken a great mission to provide e-literacy too all people in a time-bound manner in tune with the changing modern times, he said.

Presiding over the meeting, District Collector S. Harikishore, said e-literacy was a must to utilise the possibilities of the information technology.

Plea to local bodies

The Collector has called upon all the local self-government institutions in the district to actively take part in the ongoing e-literacy campaign. P.R. Kuttappan Nair, N. Rajeev, Vijayan Nair, all grama panchayat presidents; N.Balagopal, P.N.Panicker VigyanVikas Kendra director; Rajeev Nair, director board member, and C.K. Nazeer, district coordinator, also spoke.
