Thiruvambadi Ramabhadran, an elephant with the Thiruvambadi Devaswom, died at Ambalapuram, near here, on Wednesday.

The elephant collapsed and died at its tethering place at Ambalapuram on Wednesday morning.

Trunk paralysis

The animal was in the news for sometime after a team from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) recommended mercy killing for the elephant as it was in severe pain, distress, and in extremely poor condition owing to trunk paralysis.

It was not able to take food or water on his own and had multiple chronic wounds on its body, the team had said.

The elephant was under treatment by a team of veterinarians. It ran amok inside the Thiruvambadi temple last month when it was taken for a ritual.

Animal activists alleged that the ailing elephant was forced to take part in the temple ritual ignoring its pathetic condition.
