Ecotourism project at Kanthanpara

Trekking novices can reach waterfalls with minimum effort

The Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is gearing up to promote the Kanthanpara waterfalls in Mupainadu grama panchayat as a major eco-tourism destination in the district.

A 20-minute drive from Meppadi through tea and coffee plantations would get one to the waterfalls located at three levels amid lush green bamboo gardens and natural forests.

Easy hike

A major advantage of Kanthanpara waterfalls is that it is an easy hike away from the main road, and even children and trekking novices can reach the waterfalls with minimum effort.

The DTPC plans to develop the destination at an estimated cost of Rs.1.5 crore, says Biju Joseph, secretary DTPC. A sum of Rs.50 lakh has been earmarked for the project in the current fiscal and the work would begin on Monday. In the first phase, work on a ticket counter, two viewpoints, parking facilities, a pavement with handrails up to the waterfalls, a cafeteria, toilet block, and seating arrangement would be completed.
