Prof K K Subrahmanian, noted economist and academic who was considered an authority on the public sector industry, today died at a hospital here after a brief illness.

Prof Subrahmanian, 75, is survived by wife Padma Subrahmanian and two children, a release by Centre For Development Studies (CDS) here said.

Prof Subrahmanian was for long associated with Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research, Ahmedabad, where he had served as professor and Director.

He returned to Kerala to join the CDS in 1984 as senior Research Fellow. Since his retirement in 1994, he had been serving as honorary fellow at the CDS.

An outstanding academic and guide for researchers, he had worked as adviser to the Government of India, Government of Kerala and the state Planning Board.

Prof Subrahmanian also did extensive research in the areas of international economics, technology transfer and development, regional economics, labour economics and science and technology policy analyses.

He had penned eight books and a large number of research papers in professional journals on various aspects of India’s economic development.
