The Election Commission has served a notice to Minister for Overseas Affairs Vayalar Ravi for allegedly announcing some sops at a public meeting in Kannur where an Assembly by-poll is scheduled on Nov. 7.

The notice has been issued to Ravi on Tuesday for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct and asked him to reply in 48 hours, the EC said.

Addressing the election meeting on October 16, the Minister had announced a financial grant of Rs. five lakh for sports facilities at Nirmalagiri college and promised to recruit hundreds of youth to the Union of European Nations.

The CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala had earlier lodged a complaint against Ravi with the EC in this regard.
