The motor vehicles of those found indulging in drunk driving in the capital will be confiscated and will be handed over only after the erring motorist attends the special awareness class being organised by the city police.

The measure is part of the fortnight-long traffic safety drive launched in the capital by the City Police under the District Police Chief, Thiruvananthapuram City, P. Prakash. During the drive, 150 were booked on January 4 for signal violations in the junctions and jumping the zebra crossing meant for pedestrians. The drive by the police that focussed on the use of mobile phones by the motorists while driving on Friday netted 30 persons.

The District Police Chief said apart from enforcing the traffic rules, booking the erring motorists and creating awareness among motorists and road users, the police will take steps to address the geometric corrections and other issues in roads.

In the coming days, Mr. Prakash said the police will look for booking those indulging in drunk driving, driving without helmets and using mobile phones while driving.

Seat belt

The police have also been asked to bring to book those driving without seat belt, indulging in overload and carrying more commuters than the sanctioned capacity of the vehicle, overspeeding, use of airhorn and illegal alteration of the motor vehicles, especially motorcycles.

During the drive, the police will identify accident prone areas in the city and will take preventive steps. Awareness classes for school, college students and drivers of autorickshaw and educational institution buses (EIB) will also be organised. Pamphlets on traffic safety will also be distributed to motorists and road users.
