Doctors under the aegis of the Indian Medical Association State branch have decided to stage a dharna in front of the Secretariat on May 17 as part of Statewide protests against the failure to arrest those behind the alleged abduction of a doctor at a private hospital in Vadakara last month.

The doctors are seeking that laws protecting them be strictly implemented.

The IMA State action committee, at an emergency meeting in Kozhikode on Sunday, condemned the delay in arresting those behind the incident that occurred on April 23.

A statement issued by the IMA here said the incident was a grave one. Such incidents could put the lives of those under treatment in hospitals in danger, and turn doctors away from providing emergency treatment to those.

The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association, Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association, Kerala Government Insurance Medical Officers Association, Kerala Medical Postgraduate Students Association, House Surgeons’ Assocation, and medical students will take part in the protests.

The IMA also warned of agitation, including strike, if no action was taken on the issue raised by it.
