Loading of foodgrains resumes at the Kollam main depot of Supplyco on Thursday.

Movement of foodgrains from the Kollam main depot of Supplyco to ration shops in the city and periphery under the Food Security Act (FSA) resumed on Thursday.

The supply was hit for the past two days following a strike by depot headload workers.

FSA stipulation

The dispute cropped after the workers refused to weigh the sacks and then load it on the truck. The FSA stipulates that all foodgrains going for retail distribution under the Act should mandatorily weighed before being taken from the depot, where it is stocked.

While the workers based at Supplyco depots in other parts of the district obliged to the condition, those at the main deport objected to it on grounds that it was not part of their work. They demanded additional wages for the work.

The issue was solved with the headload workers agreeing to the condition at a meeting called by District Collector T. Mithra on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan last week at a function here inaugurated the foodgrain distribution system in the State under the FSA.
