Dam panel prepares for underwater survey

The empowered committee appointed by the Supreme Court to look into the safety aspects of Mullaperiyar dam began the process for installing equipment for underwater survey of the dam on Friday.

A top official of the Irrigation Department said that the survey was likely to begin on Saturday itself, though the department was yet to be officially intimated. However, reliable sources said that the remote operated underwater vehicle (ROUV) was brought to the site in lorry and the expert team would arrive later. There is confusion as to when the team will begin the survey and the duration of the survey.

The area had been is put under tight police security as demanded by the committee, a top police official said and added that entry of mediapersons had been barred. A police team led by Kattappana DySP is in charge of ensuring smooth sconduct of the survey.
