A four-month cyber crime awareness programme will be launched for school and college students of Chengannur taluk here from September 4.
Addressing a press conference here, P.C. Vishnunath, Chengannur MLA, said that the programme would be organised with the support of the Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KELSA), Kerala State IT Mission and the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT).
The objective of the programme is to develop ‘cyber literate and cyber crime devoid campuses' in Chengannur taluk, which would be the first of its kind in the State, he said.
The student community, prone to crimes such as harassment through e-mails, cyber-stalking, child pornography, cyber defamation, morphing, e-mail spoofing and others, would be taught how to use cyber space effectively and safely, the pros and cons of using mobile phones, apart from the different types of cyber crimes on campuses, the cyber law and the IT Act.
The project will focus on 26 high schools, 13 higher secondary schools and six colleges, covering over 30,000 students in the taluk in the process.
Booklets and brochures will be given to students and teachers. The sessions will be handled by the Computer Emergency Response Team-Kerala, the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala, the Cyber Crime police station of the State police and also lawyers from the High Court.
KELSA executive chairman and judge of the Kerala High Court C.N. Ramachandran Nair will inaugurate the programme at the Sree Ayyappa College, Chengannur, on September 4. Justice S. Siri Jagan would inaugurate the faculty training and workshop on the occasion, Mr. Vishnunath, who is the chairman of the programme implementation committee, said.
