Custodial death: charge sheet against 12 policemen

The Crime Branch police investigating the custodial death of Sampath, the first accused in the Puthur Sheela murder case, have filed a charge sheet against 12 police officials accusing them of murder under IPC 302.

The 12 accused in the charge sheet filed in the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court II are P.V. Ramesh, Sub-Inspector of Police, Town North police station; T.N. Unnikrishnan, SI, Town South police station; Ramachandran, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, Town North Station; and nine constables —.Johnson Lobo, Shyama Prasad (Crime Detachment), Madhavan, Shilan, Abdul Rasheed, Praveen, Vijayan, Biju and Brijith. The Crime Branch investigating team is headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Unni Raja.

District Superintendent of Police Vijay Sahara said departmental action would be initiated against the accused after getting a copy of the charge sheet filed by the Crime Branch.

However, the Crime Branch can arrest the accused persons on the basis of its report filed in the court, police sources here said.

The first accused in the Puthur Sheela murder case, Sampath, died in police custody on March 29, 2010. Sheela Jayakrishnan was murdered on March 22 at her house in Puthur here.
