Culling of birds continues in Kottayam

The culling operations in the district continued for the second day on Thursday even as the negative results for the samples sent from three panchayats in the district added a new twist to the already vexed issue.

According to Sasidharan Nair, district animal husbandry officer, the total number of birds culled during the  two days has been put at 4,173 ducks and 1,343 broiler chicken in the district.

Meanwhile, the Avian Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) at Thiruvalla has found the samples sent from the three panchayats of Thalayazham, Vechoor and Chengalam negative for avian flu. Mr. Nair meanwhile, said that the culling operations in these panchayats would be taken up only after getting a confirmation from the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Bengaluru.

According to him, 4,173, ducks were culled so far in Kareemadom area in Aymanam, the epicentre of the outbreak in the district. In addition, 1,343 broiler chicken in Kumarakom have also been culled. The teams will continue their operations. In addition, they will review the situation for further action.
