CU to upgrade island centres as colleges

Calicut University will soon upgrade its centres in Lakshadweep to colleges. A meeting of officials held at Kavaratti Island on Friday decided to upgrade the centres as part of improving educational facilities in Lakshadweep.

The university will also build a hostel on its Tenhipalam campus exclusively for Lakshadweep students.

Project report

The Higher Education Department of Lakshadweep will prepare a project to realise these objectives.

Calicut University Vice Chancellor K. Moammed Basheer, Lakshadweep Administrator Vijay Kumar, University Registrar T.A. Abdul Majeed, Finance Officer K.P. Rajesh, and Lakshadweep Dean P.P. Mohammed were among those who attended the meeting.

Soft-skill training

The meeting also decided to launch a soft-skill training programme for Lakshadweep students by involving Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Officials said that degree students from the island would benefit from the scheme.

The university will open an office in Kavaratty for its dean to supervise and coordinate the projects. The dean will stay on the island for six months a year.
